Cool new book, unfortunatly they left out the D'ni language of the Myst books and games. That's pretty big to be left out of a book like this.

Matt Gaser: Worldbuilder Extraordinaire

Gluba Vanderhon the Giant

I often judge a movie or a book or a painting or a computer game on whether or not I strongly want to go to the world it (re)presents. When I saw these images, I felt that immediately.

Garga's Concern

Both of these images he illustrated for a story he is also writing.

Be sure out check out his beautiful website:

"Why do people go to the cinema? What takes them into a darkened room where, for two hours, they watch the play of shadows on a sheet? The search for entertainment? The need for some kind of drug? All over the world there are, indeed, entertainment firms and organizations which exploit cinema and television and spectacles of many other kinds. Our starting point, however, should not be there, but in the essential principles of cinema, which have to do with the human need to master and know the world. I think what a person normally goes to the cinema for is time: time lost or spent or not yet had. He goes there for living experience; for cinema, like no other art, widens, enhances and, concentrates a person's experience- and not only enhances it but makes it longer, significantly longer. That is the power of cinema: 'stars', story-lines and entertainment have nothing to do with it."

Ruler of the Night

The moon glared at me tonight
as any common street light glares.

I have never looked up at the moon and thought Ruler of the Night (which it was christened at it's birth) But tonight, yes tonight I did!

Once I was riding in a car with some friends and there was a full moon surrounded by clouds in the sky. I said "That looks just like the dreamworks moon!" After a pause someone said "But Stephen, that's a full moon. "Oh...right."

What I had meant of course was the feeling I get when I see that moon in the dark sky is similar to the feeling I get when I see the beautiful DreamWorks moon in the dark theater.
